I. NAMES OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
A. Eucharist [S:2168 Eucharisteo eu)xariste/w; to be grateful, express gratitude, say grace] – Mat. 26:27; Luke 22:19 and “took bread, and gave thanks”; Luke 22:20 “Likewise also the cup after supper”; 1 Cor. 11:24 “when he had given thanks” Cp. 1 Thes. 5:18 Note 1: This second “thanks” for the Communion bread and cup “after supper” (Luke 22:19- 20), was after the first “thanks” when He took the cup and “gave thanks” during the Passover meal (Luke 22:17). Foot Washing was after Passover Supper (John 13:1-2, 4) and before Jesus handed Judas the sop who “having received the sop went immediately out” to betray Him (John 13:21-30). This happened after Communion (Luke 22:21-23).
Note 2: In addition to “thanks” [S:2168 Eucharisteo eu)xariste/w], in 1 Corinthians 10:16, Paul called it “the cup of blessing.” Where “blessing” is Eulogias eu)logi/a$ [S:2129], from Eu, good, well (S:2095 Eu) + Logia, speaking (S:3056 Logos). Cp. Genesis 4:10; Hebrews 12:24-25 “speaketh”; Hebrews 12:28 “grace.”
B. Lord’s Table [trape/zh$ S:5132 Trapeza tra/peza; table or stool + kuri/ou S:2962 Kurios ku/ rio$; God, Lord, master, Sir +] – 1 Cor. 10:21 Cp. v. 20 “devils”
C. Communion [S:2842 Koinonia koinwni/a (koy-nohn-ee’-ah); “partnership, i.e. participation, intercourse KJV: (to) communicate (-ation), communion, (contri-) distribution, fellowship] – 1 Cor. 10:16 Note: The Body of Christ (“the Bread”) and The Blood of Christ (“the Cup”) shared by the member’ “Partakers” make it “Communion” (1 Cor. 10:16-17).
D. Lord’s Supper [Kuriakon S:2960 Kuriakos; belonging to the Lord’s + dei=pnon S:1173 Deipnon; dinner] – 1 Cor. 11:20 Note: Eating and Drinking in “Remembrance” of Jesus Christ makes it the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor. 11:20, 24-26). But Eating hungry and Drinking as a drunkard makes it “his own supper,” thinking about himself, disregarding the Body and Blood Jesus (1 Cor. 11:21).
E. Thusia [“a sacrifice”] and Musterion [“closed circle of believers] – Historical Names
Note: The fellowship with Christ was also to be with one another, as “one bread, and one body” (1 Cor. 10:17). Some rushed from home as gluttonous drunkards, not making it about Him/Jesus or them/the co-participants (1 Cor. 11:21, 33). This made that individual “guilty” of eating “unworthily” – an adverb describing the eating error as being ‘how they ate’; not an adjective which would have described the person’s spiritual state (1 Cor. 11:27, 29). This one error brings “damnation” [S:2917 Krima kri/ma] to “himself” (1 Cor. 11:29). This one error is later called “condemnation” [S:2917 Krima kri/ma] (1 Cor. 11:34). There is an easy God-given Bible fix to prevent one from eating “unworthily” and to do it right. Eat this together in remembrance of Him, discerning it’s The Eucharist,
The Lord’s Table, Communion, The Lord’s Supper, (1 Cor. 11:33-34)
